Today I found online that Ms. Gina Yang from Florida did very kind and excellent job for translating my talk about the mechanism of COVID-19 and self-rescure measures. Here is the link of her blog:

When people are infected by coronavirus, the first thing that comes to mind is hospitalization for treatment. I believe that facing this global epidemic people must learn to help themselves. To safe their own lives, people need a clear understanding of Coronavirus mechanism and proven self-help methods. Dr Jun Wu’s lecture includes both coronavirus mechanism and practical self-rescue measures. I translate it from Chinese into English and share with as many people as possible. Hope we can use the knowledge and methods to end this pandemic soon.
Dr Jun Wu is a doctor of medical science engaged in microbiology and oncology research in the United States. He is an associate professor at City of Hope Medical Center, one of the largest cancer hospitals also a directer of the animal tumor laboratory. The following is Dr Wu’s lecture at a global public health conference.
Why current advanced medical facilities cannot save patients’ lives?
In China, thousands of people died of coronavirus infection in the hospitals, and that include some doctors and nurses. One of the cases was Dr Ling Hong, my classmate in the medical school. He was engaged in molecular biology research. On January 25th, he started having a fever, on February 4th his nucleic acid test was positive, he was hospitalized on February 5th and died on February 7th. Such cases tell us that in the later stage of this disease, even hospitals have medical equipment like ventilator and ECMO still they cannot save lives. Because the death of coronavirus patients is caused by the excessive immune response produced a large number of free radicals that caused damage to the internal organs.
What is free radical?
Free radicals are a kind of very active chemical that easily reacts with other substances, once reacted, it can denature proteins and damage DNA. It is very destructive but actually it is our own immune cells, such as neutrophils, mast cells, … The function of these cells is to eliminate bacteria and viruses that invaded our body, but these cells have no distinguishing function, when they destroy the virus, they also cause the damage to the cells of our body.
When the virus enters a person’s body, his immune system fights back and he will have a fever. Fever is a defensive response. When a patient has fever, in his body neutrophils and mast cells release a lot of free radicals. There are several kinds of free radicals, peroxide free radicals are more powerful, and some other hydroxide free radicals are very easy to react with proteins and DNA. (Forgive me if the names of the cell is incorrect. I studied cell biology many years ago and returned the knowledge to my teacher. Gina) The reaction will cause cells die. That’s how the patient’s heart, lungs, liver, and kidneys are damaged. Medical research has found that this to be a common phenomenon. No matter what the virus is, its pathology is similar. For example, hepatitis virus infects liver cells, it is not the virus itself that causes liver cell disease but when immune cells fight back, they also killed liver cells and lead to liver necrosis. There are three development stages of Coronavirus.
The first stage is early infection stage. The symptoms include fatigue, soreness, and lack of appetite. At this stage, the virus multiplies in the body. Viruses are not the same as bacteria. Bacterias can produce on their own, the virus must rely on the human cell system to multiply. The virus left on some subjects will die in certain period of time.
At the second stage, the immune system fights back and high fever develops. Some people have a fever for 3-5 days. The immune system produces excess free radicals when it clearing the virus. Free radicals cause severe damage to the heart, lungs, liver and kidneys. After the fever, the amount of virus in the body is already very low. Now the virus is not a problem, the problem is the major organs are severely damaged.
In the third development stage of coronavirus, the damage to the major organs lead to symptoms of respiratory failure, heart failure, liver failure, and renal failure. At this stage, some older and frail are quickly dying. Using a ventilator to sustain life, it is not a cure. People of good constitution may survive.
Early treatment is the key.
The most important thing to do is symptomatic treatment. During the first and second stages, the excessive immune response must be suppressed. Many doctors do not know the mechanism of this disease, they will use some antiviral drugs such as Ostamvir. (I am not sure the name is correct.) In fact, at the second stage the amount of the virus is already very low and eliminate the virus is not important. That’s why some people no longer have a fever and their nucleic acid test result is negative but they are still dead because the damage to the major organs cannot be repaired. Those antiviral drugs are not useful in the late stage treatment. The treatment should focus on avoid the major organs being damaged.
Hormones are also commonly used medicine. Hormones can suppress the immune response but they are not effective in late stage treatment. Most patients are hospitalized only when they are seriously ill. For those who have respiratory failure, using hormones is not useful. The sequelae of hormones are terrible. Hormones can disrupt the absorption of bone calcium and cause osteoporosis led to some people have to use wheelchair in the rest of their life.
Some medical guidelines talk about using antibiotics. Antibiotics can suppress secondary bacteria infections and they are not antiviral medicine.
What treatment is available?
Now we understand the mechanism of COVID-19 and free radical is the killer. What can we do to save lives?
Vitamin C and Vitamin E are natural, strong free radical scavenging supplement. Vitamin E is ten times stronger than vitamin C. As health care supplement, you can take vitamin C 500 mg and vitamin E 100 IU daily. To treat the first and the second stage coronavirus, the patients need to take 3000 mg vitamin C daily, do not exceed 3000 mg, also take vitamin E up to 1000IU daily. This is the measure of treatment, not for health care purpose. If you are not infected and have no early stage symptoms such as soreness all over the body, fatigue, and other cold symptoms do not use such a large amount.
Resting well and drinking a lot of water. Replenish electrolytes lost due to fever and sweat, and expel toxins from the body. Many patients who recovered from coronavirus infection emphasize drinking plenty of water is very helpful.
What else can we use? Chinese herbs like Ban Lan Gen, Jin Yin Hua, etc. These herbs do not kill the virus but remove free radicals to protect the internal organs. Another Chinese herbal remedy Xiao Chai Hu Tang is very effective in treating flu. These medicines do not require a prescription, have no negative side effects, and are inexpensive. I am not a Chinese medicine doctor, I won’t talk much about Chinese herbal remedies.
If you think what I said make sense, please share with your family and friends, especially the people who have been infected, let them take self-rescue measures immediately, don’t wait for the condition to get serious and be hospitalized, it may be too late.
